What proximity chat means

Proximity chat comes from games: you hear the players near you and not the ones across the map, the way sound works in a real place. Virtual offices borrowed the idea so that where you stand decides who you talk to. There are two ways to do it, and they feel very different at work.

How it works on TinyFloor

  1. 1.

    Walk up

    1

Move your character next to a teammate. A small card appears with a Call button.

  2. 2.

    Call

    2

They see "Calling you" and can answer or decline. If they're busy or don't answer, you're told, and nothing else happens.

  3. 3.

    Talk

    3

The call starts with voice. Turn on a camera or share a screen if it helps.

  4. 4.

    Walk around

    4

Once connected, the call stays up until someone hangs up, so moving across the floor doesn't drop it.

  5. 5.

    Add a third

    5

A call is two people. Walk up to a third and TinyFloor offers to make it a meeting for the three of you.

Why calls instead of open audio

  • Nobody overhears by accident. Your microphone is only on in a call or a meeting. Passing someone's desk never lets you hear them.
  • Focus stays possible. A floor full of open microphones is a noisy room. Calls keep the rest of the floor quiet.
  • It still feels spontaneous. Walking over and tapping Call takes a couple of seconds, about the same as leaning over to a colleague.
  • It works on any network. Calls go through Cloudflare's relay network, so they connect behind office firewalls and on mobile networks, with nothing to install.

What it doesn't do

TinyFloor doesn't have open spatial audio, so a group can't chat just by standing together; three or more people go to a meeting. It isn't built for events or games with hundreds of people, and there's no phone dial-in. If you want a lively space where voices drift as you walk around, a product built around spatial audio will suit you better; if you want a quiet office where talking is one tap away, this is it.

Common questions.

What is proximity chat?

Proximity chat connects you with people based on where your character is. You talk to the people near you, the way you would in a real room.

Does the call end when I walk away?

No. Once a call is connected it stays connected until someone hangs up, so walking around does not drop it.

Can more than two people talk?

A call is two people. Walk up to a third and make it a meeting, or join the office's meeting to talk as a group.

Is it free?

Yes, for an office of up to 3 people, in the browser on desktop and mobile.
