What is proximity chat?

Proximity chat lets you talk to the people near you in a virtual space, and not to everyone else. It started in games, where it makes worlds feel alive, and is now how virtual offices let teams talk without meeting links.

How proximity chat works

Every person has a position on a map, in a game world or on an office floor. Instead of everyone hearing everyone, the space decides who can talk: get close to someone and you can hear each other, move away and the conversation ends.

Some versions fade voices with distance, the way sound works in a room. Others connect you once you're next to someone, the way you'd walk up to a colleague's desk.

Proximity chat in games

Games use it to make conversations part of the world. Some well-known examples:

  • Social deduction games. Mods for Among Us added proximity voice, so you only hear the players near you and can whisper plans.
  • Survival games. Rust and DayZ use proximity voice, so meeting a stranger means actually talking to them.
  • Co-op games. In Lethal Company, a teammate who wanders off becomes hard to hear, which is half the tension.
  • Sandbox games. Minecraft servers add proximity voice with mods, so a shared world feels like a real place.

Proximity chat at work

Virtual offices use the same idea for remote teams. Your team shares a 2D floor, each person is a character, and you talk by moving next to someone instead of sending a meeting link.

It brings back what video calls lose: seeing who's around, quick questions and side conversations. Two people can talk in one corner while others work, the way they would in a real office.

Two styles of proximity chat

  • Always-on spatial audio. Audio connects automatically when you're near someone and fades with distance. It feels lively, but you can be heard before you mean to be.
  • Walk up and call. Walking up to someone gives you a button to call them, and nothing is heard until you start the call. It's calmer and suits work better.

Pros and cons

  • No meeting links. Talking is as easy as walking over, so small questions get asked.
  • Side conversations. Several conversations can happen at once in the same space.
  • Presence. You can see who's around before you interrupt anyone.
  • It needs a shared space. It only works if the team keeps the space open while they work.

Common questions.

What does proximity chat mean?

It means you can talk only to the people close to you in a virtual space. Move closer to someone to talk; move away and the conversation ends.

Is proximity chat private?

Only people near you can hear you, which is more private than a channel everyone is in. In the walk-up style, nothing is heard until you start a call.

Which games have proximity chat?

Rust, DayZ and Lethal Company have it built in, and mods add it to games like Among Us and Minecraft.

Can you use proximity chat for work?

Yes. Virtual offices like TinyFloor, Gather and SpatialChat use it so remote teams can talk by walking up to each other instead of scheduling calls.

Still wondering? Try the demo office and see for yourself.
