Check-in questions to open any meeting.

A check-in is one question everyone answers at the start of a meeting, in a sentence or a word. It gets every voice into the room early, tells you how people are actually doing, and takes two or three minutes. Here are 50 to choose from, grouped by how much time you have and what you want to learn.

How to run a check-in

  • One question, everyone answers. Go round in a fixed order, or let the last person pick the next. Allow a pass.
  • Keep answers short. A word or a sentence. If something needs more, note it and come back to it after the meeting.
  • Match the question to the meeting. A quick round before a standup, a deeper question before a retro or a one-on-one.
  • Answer it yourself first. The person running the meeting goes first and sets the length and the tone.

Common questions.

What is a check-in question?

One question everyone answers at the start of a meeting, briefly. It gets everyone talking early and shows how people are doing before the work starts.

What's a good check-in question for a team meeting?

"What's the one thing you most need to finish this week?" for a work meeting, or "One word for how you're arriving today?" when time is short.

How long should a check-in take?

Two or three minutes for a team of up to ten: a word or a sentence each.

Are check-ins the same as icebreakers?

Close. Icebreakers help people who don't know each other start talking; check-ins help a team that already works together share how they're doing and what they need.
